In the context of environmental impact studies for offshore wind farms according to § 2 Marine Facilities Ordinance (“Seeanlagenverordnung”), we arrange ornithological studies in the Baltic and North Sea.
The surveys of resting and migratory birds are carried out according to the standard examination concept for the impacts of offshore wind turbines on the marine environment (StUK 3) of the Federal Office of Ocean Shipping and Hydrography (BSH).
We arrange transect surveys recording the distribution and frequency of birds resting, foraging or moulting, which is based on the international "Seabirds at Sea" (SAS) method. All observations are synchronously transferred to a GPS-supported position recording and carried out all year long, twice a month.
The bird migration survey is conducted by sight observation and recording of flight routes as well as ship radar contact.
For this purpose, a 24-hour examination is conducted during 50 recording days for the North Sea and 52 days for the Baltic Sea. For all ornithological surveys, we cooperate with experienced offshore bird watchers.
